Nintendo has always been willing to take risks with their video game systems – among other things, they pioneered controller joysticks, motion controls, and handheld gaming. So far, it looks like the Nintendo Switch will continue that trend. Part home console, part portable system, the Nintendo Switch will also reportedly be able to integrate with your smart devices.
Nintendo Switch will already be pretty unique among consoles, thanks to its ability to switch (get it?) between a home system and a mobile gaming device. And now we’re learning that the Switch will have the ability to integrate with smart devices. Here’s what Nintendo designer Yoshiaki Koizumi had to say in a recent interview:
…one thing I am able to mention to you is you will be able to use your smart device to chat with people you are playing with online.
And because this is a device almost everyone has we think that there is a very broad reach for this service, I think it’s a unique approach that people haven’t quite seen out in the world just yet. But because it is unique it is a bit difficult to explain all at once out of the gate, so we wanted to take a little bit of time and wait until we roll out some of the other information surrounding it.
That sounds like smartphone integration, though Koizumi’s use of “smart device” suggests the features may go beyond our smartphones. For now, all we can do is wait and see.
